There has never been a busier time for the Singaporean and Malaysian border crossings as people travel back and forth, longing to be reunited with their families. You may be tempted to make a road trip from Singapore to Malaysia at any time.
However, driving from Singapore to Malaysia requires knowledge of the laws and regulations. Fortunately, our friends at Pacific Prime CXA will answer some frequently asked questions about the Singapore to Malaysia road trip.
When traveling to Malaysia from Singapore by road, make sure to always carry the following documents with you, as they are mandatory:
Your passport must be valid for more than 6 months to enter Malaysia. Remember to check whether your passport has been properly stamped both at the entry and exit immigration checkpoints.
You need to hold a valid driving license to drive in both Singapore and Malaysia for less than 90 days. Your National Driver’s License is accepted in Malaysia without the need to apply for an International Driving Permit.
Motor vehicles registered in Singapore need a VEP. It is mandatory to enter Malaysia via land border crossing. Now, if you are wondering how to secure a VEP for your vehicle, you need to register online via the VEP-JPJ portal and update your personal and vehicle details.
To secure a Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) for Singapore-registered vehicles entering Malaysia via land borders, here's the updated process:
○ Visit the VEP-JPJ portal to register your vehicle and provide your personal and vehicle details. You'll need information such as your NRIC, passport, vehicle registration, and insurance details. Be sure to also download the Touch N’ Go app, which links to your VEP-RFID tag for toll and road charge payments.
○ After submitting your registration, you’ll receive a confirmation email. This can take a few days or weeks. Once confirmed, you will need to proceed with the RFID tag installation.
○ You can collect your VEP-RFID tag at designated centers, including:
■ Gelang Patah Southbound RnR
■ Plaza Angsana Open Carpark C
■ Pandan RnR
■ Lima Kedai Toll Plaza
○ When visiting the center, bring your VEP confirmation slip, appointment details, photocopies of your passport, insurance, and vehicle registration documents.
○ After installation, take a photo of the tag on your vehicle and upload it to the VEPAMS portal. The RFID tag is valid for five years from activation and must be installed on a flat surface of your vehicle, typically the windshield or left headlamp.
When you are driving to Malaysia from Singapore, you will come across many tolls, and a TNG card can solely take care of all your toll payments. Note that the Ez Link x TNG - a dual currency smart card can be used in both countries for contactless payments at toll gates.
In Malaysia, you can use your TNG cards for:
● Highway tolls
● Checkpoint tolls
● Parking
● Buses
● Retail and dining
You can find these cards at selected 7-Eleven stores and petrol stations across Singapore. You could top up the card at one of the stores or via the Touch ‘n Go e-wallet app.
● Traffic Conditions: Expect traffic jams, logjams, and long waits, especially around Kuala Lumpur.
● Fuel Requirement: Make sure your fuel tank is at least 3/4 full before driving in Malaysia to avoid fines.
● Driving Rules: Many driving rules are similar to those in Singapore, such as:
○ No using phones while driving.
○ Keep headlights on from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
● Test Your Headlights and Windshield Wipers: Ensure they are working properly.
● Inspect Tires: Make sure they are in good condition and not worn out.
● Check Brakes: Confirm that brakes and other internal systems are working
.
● Park Safely: Use validated and secured parking spots overnight.
● Choose Safe Routes: Stick to well-lit and busy roads, especially at night.
● Emergency Number: In Malaysia, call 999 for emergencies.
