Each child is unique and has a unique learning style. For children with identified challenges such as Dyslexia, ADHD, or Autism, the school environment can be overwhelming. Students may benefit from interventions to support them with attention, motor integration, sensory or visual processing difficulties, speech, language, and communication difficulties, and social skills. Our multi-disciplinary team works with parents, teachers, and external professionals to ensure consistency of approach that can benefit the whole child.
Educational intervention refers to a set of targeted strategies designed to address specific academic or behavioural challenges. These interventions can take many forms, such as one-on-one coaching, small group sessions, and differentiated instructions in class. The process usually begins with identifying students who may benefit from extra support, what are the specific needs of the students, and what kind of intervention strategy is needed. Once a need is identified and a plan is formed, the intervention team will collaborate with parents and teachers to implement the intervention plan, communicate the student’s progress, and ensure the strategies are effective.
Educational interventions may/can provide numerous benefits, including improved academic performance by helping students understand challenging concepts. They increase engagement by offering tailored support, which keeps students motivated. These interventions enhance specific skills, boosting confidence and competence in areas of difficulty. They also allow for early identification of learning issues, enabling timely assistance.
Behavioural interventions can lead to positive changes in classroom behaviour and integration of social skills. Additionally, they promote personalised learning that caters to individual needs and styles, supporting diverse learners. Finally, regular progress monitoring allows for data-driven adjustments to teaching strategies, ensuring effectiveness. Overall, educational interventions create a supportive environment that fosters student growth, happiness and success.
At OFS, we offer Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Social-Emotional Support, and Learning Support as part of our comprehensive Educational Intervention program.
Our Speech and Language therapist is trained in a wide range of skills such as Early Intervention and individualised support. The therapist collaborates effectively with parents and teachers to promote inclusion and support for diverse needs within a multi-disciplinary approach.
Speech and Language Therapy addresses areas such as Speech Sound Disorders, Language Development, Social Communication, Auditory Processing, and both Literacy and Pre-Literacy skills. The goal is to help students improve their communication abilities and support their overall academic progress.
In our school, Occupational Therapy (OT) focuses on helping children participate in the daily activities (occupations) they need or want to engage in at school. It aims to maximise students' engagement in school tasks and promote independence in performing everyday activities. Our Occupational Therapist works with students to enhance academic success by developing key skills such as fine and gross motor skills, self-regulation, and social participation. OT helps remove barriers to participation and supports overall well-being.
In addition to academic and therapeutic interventions, OFS has a team of trained counsellors and mental health professionals who support students with difficulties such as friendships, academic pressure, and personal challenges. In the Kindergarten and Elementary years, our Nurture Specialists use a range of modalities that focus on play, social integration, and expressive therapy such as art and music, to support children in developing the core skills essential for a strong and confident foundation.
In the senior years, Student Welfare Advisors offer more age-appropriate support for pre-teens and teens navigating the world of Middle and High School. Our team provides confidential and inclusive support for all children and informal support to families with strategies for home.
Our team is trained in a range of modalities including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Sandplay, and Symbolwork, in addition to Mindfulness and Conflict Resolution Techniques. They provide strategies and support for students to learn to manage emotions, build resilience, and develop relationships in school.
The team works closely with students, teachers, and parents to create a safe and supportive environment that promotes social, emotional, and academic growth. In addition to confidential one-to-one counselling sessions K-12, OFS offers group sessions in the Kindy and Elementary schools. This involves four students working together to develop essential social skills, including:
In these groups, students learn to work together, share perspectives, and build positive relationships in a structured and supportive setting.
In OFS, the goal of the Learning Support (LS) team is to address students’ barriers to learning and to build underlying skills needed to be an effective learner. The team consists of Learning Support Teachers (LST) and Learning Support Assistants (LSA) who work closely with the teachers to ensure that learning becomes a positive experience for the students.
OFS implements the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) to meet the different needs of our students. The LST will work closely with the LSA, therapists, teaching team, and parents to plan and implement the support strategies for the student. Students may be supported through one-to-one guidance, small group sessions, in-class support sessions, and focus group sessions in the LST room setting. The LS team works to nurture and support the students’ independence in areas such as learning (reinforcing cognitive skills such as memorizing and recalling) and executive functioning (organizing, planning, attention).
The LST will be the case manager for the student - liaising and collaborating with external agencies such as the doctor/psychologist, monitoring the data and effectiveness of strategies implemented and reporting to parents, ensuring students get the exams arrangement access so that they can do the best that they can do. The LS team strives to ensure that our students are happy, safe, and effective learners in OFS.
OFS is dedicated to providing comprehensive support for all our students and believes that every child has the potential to learn in an inclusive setting that best meets their needs. Our team is available to support your child in ensuring they remain safe, happy, and thrive during their learning journey with us.
