Joo Chiat is where it's at!

September 2023

Hello, Joo Chiat! My how you have grown over the last few years! It’s the new “happening” neighbourhood giving the likes of Holland Village a run for its money!

There are so many different options for shopping, dining and entertainment, so, we just had to produce individual articles for each section!

So, let’s start with Dining! Here are our top 5!

1. Asador Singapore

At the top of Joo Chiat Road, along Joo Chiat Place, you will find Asador, the sister restaurant to Next Door Spanish Café, based in Siglap, and just like its sister, Asador certainly doesn’t disappoint!

The “Picoteo” or starters, are great for sharing and the Tartar & Huevos Rotos are particularly special, in fact, we may have ordered seconds…!

Seafood is big at Asador, the Octopus was divine! Don’t forget to ask what the Seafood specials are for the day.

If you still have room for more, then the “Cochinillo”, Roasted Spanish suckling pig, is cooked in a stone oven which ensures a crispy golden finishing. We were blown away by the tenderness and the taste, quite simply incredible!

We left full and a little drunk! The Red wine went down a little too well!

2. Night Shift/Common Man Coffee Roasters

Common Man by Day and Night Shift by night!

There was such a buzz of excitement about Common Man opening in the East and of course, Joo Chiat Rd was a perfect place for their 3rd branch to be situated. As we have long loved their awesome coffee and brunches by day, we just had to try their night offering, Night Shift!

Originally a nomadic natural wine purveyor, Night Shift offers “gut-pleasing grapes and grains free of nasty chemicals”. Their Sourdough pizzas are amazing and full of taste, however our absolute favourite dish was the Sourdough Karaage (Japanese Fried Chicken), just delicious!

3. Braseiro Restaurant
If you love meat, especially steak, then you are in for treat at Braseiro! Having frequently dined at their sister restaurant, Burger Frites, situated directly on the road opposite, we couldn’t wait to try the menu at Braseiro!

First impressions walking in was that their décor was very simple and we were hoping the food had more to offer… it certainly did!

We started off with their homemade Garlic and Cheese Bread, which was quite simply one of the best we have tasted in the area!

Next we chose the “Brochettes de Beouf” (steak skewers), served with their “unlimited” homemade fries and we were in heaven! The Beef was cooked perfectly and the fries, well they were to die for, quite literally the best fries in Singapore! Our only complaint was that we didn’t have room for dessert! Oh well we will just have to go back soon!

4. Picotin Katong

Picotin has been around since 2007, originally in Turf City, and now has 3 restaurant locations in Singapore.

Situated in a beautiful colonial bungalow from the late 19th century, the casual and inviting vibe is especially great for families.

A European menu is on offer, with Pizzas, Fish and Chips, Burgers and even Paella!

We were super excited to try the Fish and Chips, having been told by friends that it wouldn’t disappoint and it certainly didn’t! We will be back for more!

5. La Bottega Enoteca

La Bottega Enoteca arrived with bang on Joo Chiat Rd, so much so, that we had to book a month in advance! So to say we were excited to try this popular Italian Restaurant was an understatement! The ambience was beautiful and we almost felt we were situated down a backstreet in Rome!

Set menus are the only option here with a Sunday Family Brunch option along with a 6 Course Dinner and 3 Course Lunch Menu (Fri & Sat only).

We went all out for the 6 Course Dinner and we were quite literally blown away!

The Pizza was so tasty with its signature crackling crust, the Raviolli was silky smooth and then there was the “Tortino Al Rum” for dessert which is a Rum soaked Sponge with Custard… need we say anymore, just so delicious! We left full and with a warm fuzzy feeling!

Quite literally spoilt for choice!
